March of Dimes March for Babies set for Wayne Hills HS

(by Debra Winters - April 21, 2008)

Those looking to contribute to a fund that aids premature babies and other important causes can take part in an upcoming charity event while getting exercise at the same time. The March of Dimes "March for Babies" walk will be held on April 27 at Wayne Hills High School (WHHS) beginning 9 a.m.

A spokesperson from the March of Dimes said they are expecting about 600 to 800 people turning out to make a difference.

The day starts off with breakfast consisting of Entenmann’s sweets, coffee supplied by Starbucks, and bagels from Sunrise Bagels. Following the walk, participants will be treated to lunch from Applebee’s, who is providing 800 sandwich wraps, along with goodies from Cheeseburgers in Paradise, plus water and other beverages from Sodexo.

March of Dimes is the leading nonprofit organization for pregnancy and baby health. It is dedicated to improving the health of babies in the way of preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality.

According to Shannon Hurley, communications manager for March of Dimes, $185,000 was raised at last year’s walk held at WHHS.

"This year we’re hoping to exceed $200,000," Hurley said.

Bob Stein of Fair Lawn has been participating in March of Dimes walks in many different locations such as Princeton, Jersey City, and Secaucus for the past 11 years. Stein’s son, Zachary, now 13, was born five and a half months premature, is experiencing developmental and emotional delays, which he goes to physical and occupational therapy for. He is learning disabled and has aides that accompany him in different special educational classes.

This is Stein’s first time walking at WHHS. He began walking when the company he works for started a team. Zachary has always been a part of the walks and when he got older Zachary started walking with his cub scout pack.

"It’s always a good day and you meet so many different people all for a great cause," Stein said.

Those interested in walking at WHHS can sign up the day of the walk starting 8 a.m. Find out more about the walk at www.marchforbabies.org.
