St. Joseph's $250 million expansion to break ground in the sprin
William McDonald, president and chief executive officer for the St. Joseph’s Healthcare System, recently delivered a presentation on the St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center’s $250 million capital expansion program. The project is slated to break ground in spring of 2008.
"Designed to enhance and expand the medical and surgical services provided to our patients, the proposed master facilities plan will also have a positive impact on Paterson’s overall redevelopment and revitalization," said McDonald.
The plan features a new 230,000 square-foot building, which will house new operating rooms, a larger emergency room, and two levels of critical care areas designed for ICU and cancer treatments. Specialized women’s and children’s care facilities are also slated to be expanded and upgraded. Additionally, the plan allows for a hotel, parking garage and some retail space all of which will be operated by a third party. The hospital’s heliport system will be relocated to the rooftop of a new building so it can be better utilized.
Congressman Bill Pascrell, Jr. was one of several attendees on-hand to listen to the presentation.
"St. Joseph’ is a cornerstone of our community," stated Rep. Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-NJ-08). "I am excited about the proposed expansion and confident that it will help serve the medical needs of this region and boost our local economy here in Passaic County."
Following the presentation, McDonald announced that Robert L. Marcalus, vice chairman of the Marcal Paper Mills, will serve as the capital campaign chairman, which will be the biggest fundraising effort in the hospital’s 140 year history.
"The choice for an individual to lead this campaign, was an easy one for us, the question was could we impose one more time. And true to form, once again, Robert Marcalus is willing to devote his time and energy to our Healthcare System," said McDonald. "We chose someone who has dedicated over 35 years to St. Joseph’s, having been a Trustee of St. Joseph’s since 1972 and later becoming a Trustee of the St. Joseph’s Foundation."
Marcalus has served as president and then chairman of the Foundation Board for over 10 years, leading the Foundation through a period of transition and institutional change. During his tenure as chairman, the Foundation experienced tremendous growth, while pursuing the changes necessary for keeping the hospital in pace with the economy.
"I am honored to have been selected to lead this campaign. My wife Norma, and all my family all have made it a priority to see that St. Joseph’s continues to grow and provide the very best healthcare for the region," said Marcalus. "This expansion is not only critical to the medical needs of the hospital, but also to the financial needs of the local and regional economy."
"His extraordinary generosity to St. Joseph’s, both in direct financial support and in countless hours of time given selflessly to promote St. Joseph’s mission, are unparalleled in the foundation’s history," said Timothy P. Barr, vice president and executive director of the St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center Foundation .Barr continues, "His legacy of leadership has extended to his children, with son Nicholas Marcalus serving as a member of the St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center Board and as a former member of the Foundation Board."
Earlier this year, the hospital honored the Marcalus family by naming a portion of the new Emergency Department, "The Marcalus Family Emergency Lobby."
