State DOT promotes carpooling program

(by Tom Boud - May 28, 2008)

With gasoline zeroing in on $4 per gallon, group transportation really does make a great deal of "cents" for commuters.

The state Department of Transportation's (DOT) "Carpooling Makes Sense" program has grown since its May 2006 inception. From then until end of 2007, cumulative statewide carpools under the initiative have jumped from 118 to 4,485, according to Timothy Greeley, DOT spokesperson.

DOT statistics illustrate the efficiency of ridesharing. Commuting just 15 miles each way can cost over $1,750 per person each year. Traveling with just one more individual can cut the expense in half. Ridesharing can be done by carpool, vanpool, bus, train, or shuttle.

According to Greeley, people interested in Carpooling Makes Sense can visit www.state.nj.us/transportation/commuter/rideshare/. The site has information about other similar endeavors as well as an online application for those interested in setting up a carpool.

Greeley said the DOT pairs up potential carpoolers through information based matches. He said each candidate is asked to provide the following: home and work addresses, work schedule, and vehicle

availability. He added preferences are noted such as being carpool driver or passenger, and smoking/non-smoking. The DOT makes matches based on the collected data. Each shared ride must have a minimum of two participants.

Greeley added that each carpool is eligible for a $100 gas card, if certain criteria are met. Further details can be found at the aforementioned Web site.

Greeley said that the DOT believes mass travel yields multiple benefits.

"NJDOT launched Carpooling Makes Sense in order to provide motorists with an incentive to carpool, thereby reducing fuel consumption, air pollution, and traffic volume."
