Picnic, circus, fire drill on busy Totowa schedule

(by Tom Boud - September 02, 2008)

Summer is ending on a sizzling note with these happenings.

At its Aug. 26 meeting, the Borough Council approved an ordinance creating a new street: Cedar Court. The eastside road is on Riverview Drive near the namesake firehouse. The lane will serve some new homes in town, according to Totowa Mayor John Coiro.

"It’s a little cul-de-sac. There are eight houses. It’s not replacing anything that’s there," he said.

In other news, the arrangements for Sept. 14 Republican Club picnic at the Police Athletic League building have been proceeding well. The community unity bash features food, disc jockey and band music, and children’s entertainment, according to Councilman John Waryas.

"Everything is falling into place, and we hope we have good weather."

Waryas said anticipating citizens have been asking him about the upcoming picnic. The councilman said he has fielded some calls about the popular get-together.

On Sept. 18, the North Jersey Developmental Center (NJDC), at 169 Minnisink Rd., will host the Zerbini Family Circus. Two shows are scheduled for 1:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. The performance will take place in a large tent opposite the administration building. Admission is free for the general public, according to Doris Isope, NJDC senior clerk.

On Sept. 24, the Totowa fire department will hold a mutual aid drill at Hoffman La Roche, 701 Union Boulevard. The evening practice session will involve the Totowa, Little Falls, Wayne, and West Paterson Fire Departments. Firefighting tactics, including mock smoke evolutions, will be practiced inside an empty warehouse, according to Fire Chief Vincent Marciano.

On the same date at 7 p.m., Waryas said, the Eisenhower Library will conduct a sign dedication ceremony. The formalities include ribbon cutting and remarks from town and library officials. Waryas, a library board of trustee member, said John Soldoveri of Totowa, a local philanthropist, donated the marker.

"We purchased a sign for the front lawn, and we’re going to dedicate it to Mr. Soldoveri’s sister, who was a library trustee."
