Teens are charged in paintball attack
(by Debra Winters - September 02, 2008)
Was it a ritual or a prank that led three Wayne teenagers to carry out an incident that involved a drive-by paintball shooting?
Norwood Terrace, situated near the Passaic River in Totowa, has small bungalows that were once used as summer homes. Since being coined "Midgetville" in publications such as Weird NJ, this street has gained unwanted notoriety resulting in constant harassment by those looking for dwellers less than five-feet in height.
Three Wayne teenagers are being charged as juveniles for the incident carried out on Aug. 16 that injured three people on Norwood Terrace, according to the Totowa Police Department. One was charged with aggravated assault and the other two were charged with conspiracy to commit aggravated assault.
It was by the mother of the 17-year-old - who admitted to firing the gun that injured 39-year-old Tom Kaminski - in The Record that her son was carrying out an initiation ritual before his senior year at Wayne Valley High School.
However, rituals surrounding a right of passage to becoming a senior reportedly never existed leaving many to believe this is an isolated case.
Gene Manfra, communications director for the Wayne Board of Education, said the board denies any initiation rituals at their schools. He called the incident a "private issue" unrelated to school events.
"After speaking to various staff members who are aware of the goings-on between the students we ascertained that no such ritual exists," Manfra stated.
Speaking about situation, he added, "Students should be able to distinguish between something that would be viewed as a harmless joke and something that could potentially have negative repercussions especially on their high school and college careers. The implications are huge for something that took probably all of about 10 seconds to do."
