Life saving police officers honored

(by Tina Pappas - September 22, 2008)

WEST PATERSON - Several borough police officers were honored recently for saving a child’s life. The incident occurred while the child was enrolled in a gymnastics class on July 29.

The officers were on routine patrol when they were dispatched to Gymnastika, a recreational and competitive gymnastics club located at Andrews Drive in West Paterson, headed by 1980 Olympic Champion Natalia Shaposhnikova and 1981 World Champion Pavel Sout. The child, Nicole Buttel, 12, collapsed after doing mild exercises.

"Officer Giardina got there first and started administering cardiac pulmonary resuscitation (CPR)," said Det. Sgt. John Uzzalino. "Officer Michael Brady then arrived to assist, along with Sgt. Eileen Tiernan. Det. Thomas Bolen and I arrived on the scene after we got the urgent call in our detective car. The officers also used a defibrillator and her pulse came back but it was weak. Emergency medical services arrived and rushed her to St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center where she was kept for some time."

Nicole survived and the officers were commended for outstanding performance in the line of duty in borough chambers on Sept. 3. Tiernan was hailed for outstanding supervision. The officers were presented with certificates by Mayor Pat Lepore.

"No officer wants to respond to a child not breathing and this is the most gut wrenching type of police work officers will encounter," said Police Chief Robert Reda, in a written statement. "Their dedication to service and training showed on this day that this young person, with life ahead of her, had the best this borough could offer in police service and to make certain she was given the best chance of survival."

Nicole was ultimately released from St. Joseph’s and is doing well.

"Anytime there’s an incident involving a child it’s a tough call to take, especially when that child becomes unresponsive," Reda said. "The outcome thankfully, was very positive with this particular incident. Nicole stopped by at the police department a few weeks ago to thank us. This is one of the reasons why someone becomes a police officer."

We’re so grateful to the officers that came and they knew exactly what to do," said Shaposhnikova. "Every second counts in situations like these and it all worked out for the best. Nicole is doing great and she has recovered 100 percent."
