(by Tom Boud - September 23, 2008)

LITTLE FALLS —  At Monday’s Township Council meeting, Council President Paul Huggins said he will arrange a town hall forum on the Long and Clove Hill Road intersection reconstruction plans. Huggins said he will ask Passaic County Engineer Steve Edmond to come to council chambers to speak with residents, and council members. No date has been set at press time. The proposed session follows up a Sept. 16 Township Civic Center county meeting to garner feedback about the proposals.

The conference idea after several Clove/Long Hill Road vicinity residents voiced concern. They said many people were unable to attend last week’s civic center meeting, due to its inconvenient late afternoon hours. They also noted the various intersection reconstruction options entail home removing land grabs.

Huggins said the council will move quickly to arrange the second meeting. He said at present, the county’s public input period closes on Oct. 16.

“We’ll hold it as soon as we possibly can. I don’t know if we’ll have enough time to have notifications sent out,” he said, about a systematic publicity effort.

The council president said he will try to have the county’s comment deadline pushed back.
In other news, Councilwoman Pam Porter reminded local voters that the Passaic Valley High School referendum is on for Sept. 30. Polls are open from 3 to 9 p.m. The $8 million ballot initiative would bankroll capital improvements. The upgrades include boilers, roofs, windows, turf field, and lighting.

Porter said a recent referendum tour at the high school drew only eight people. The councilwoman the matter is too significant for citizens to ignore.

“Eight million dollars is a lot of money and people need to get out and vote. People really need to get out and vote on this, because it is a big issue.”

On a final note, Huggins said the town’s televised council program needs volunteers. He said additional helpers are needed to maintain present coverage, and possibly expand it to other governmental happenings. Anyone interested call town hall at 973-256-0170.
