CROP walk raises funds and awareness

(by Tom Boud - October 07, 2008)

On Oct. 19 at 1 p.m., the annual Communities Responding To Overcome Poverty (CROP) Hunger Walk will start at Our Lady Of Holy Angels, 465 Main St. The one, three and six mile events all begin and end at the church and all routes generally stay within Little Falls, according to Jim Andreano, CROP walk organizer.

According to Andreano, the fundraising goal is $5,000, which is $2,000 more than the last walk held in April. The target turnout is at least 50 participants. Attendees from Holy Angels, United Methodist Church and First Reformed Church, all of Little Falls, are getting involved with the initiative.

There is no fee to participate. Anyone interested can call Andreano at 973-785-0347 or Lu Leonor at 973-668-6216. Volunteers can also sign up at www.cropwalk.org.

CROP Hunger Walk raises awareness and funds to further Church World Service’s (CWS) domestic/international assistance efforts. CWS is present in 80 countries globally. Its missions include helping Sudan’s Darfur refugees, tsunami victims in Indonesia, as well as hurricane and natural disaster victims.

Andreano said the CROP Hunger Walk means more than just garnering contributions. He said one purpose is calling attention to the millions of struggling Third World country citizens. Andreano said they must amble many miles every day to get food. He added another objective is creating a spiritual bond with such individuals.

"The theme is ‘we walk, because they walk.’ We want, in some tiny way, to feel what these people must feel."

Andreano said the last CROP benefit was held in April. He said, from now on, the annual anti-starvation crusade will be held in October.

"We found that October, for whatever reason, was more successful in terms of participation."
