Borough has busy fall calendar
(by Tom Boud - October 07, 2008)
WEST PATERSON - There’s more coming onto the horizon than the changing leaves.
The deadline to file an application to vote in the Nov. 4 general election registration is Oct. 14. Applications can be obtained at the municipal clerk’s office, 5 Brophy Lane, second floor. For further information, call the clerk’s office at 973-345-8100, ext. 100, according to borough sources.
In addition, the necessary form can be printed out from the town Web site at www.westpaterson.com. To do so, click on the New Jersey voter registration application link, under the site’s "Dates To Note" column.
Another option is visiting the County Clerk’s Office at the Passaic County Administration Building, 401 Grand Street, Paterson. For more details, call 973-225-3632.
On Monday, Borough Administrator Kevin Galland, when asked, said voter signups have not been unusually high, despite this year’s attention-drawing presidential race.
Aside from the president, voters will also choose a mayor for the borough, either incumbent Pat Lepore or challenger Steve Fazio. In addition, recently revealed was a petition filed to place a referendum on the ballot to change the borough’s name to Woodland Park. Voters have denied previous efforts: 2001 to Garret Mountain, 1995 to West Park and 1989 to Woodland Park. More details on the elections and referendum will be featured later this month in Passaic Valley Today.
Book sale
On Oct. 18 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., a book sale will be held at the Alfred Baumann Library on Brophy Lane on the front lawn. The event is sponsored by the Friends of the Library. Raindate is Oct. 19.
There will be thousands of items offered at nominal prices, according to Robert Lindsley, library director.
"There’s a wide range of stuff that runs the complete gamut."
Lindsley said the items include paperbacks, hardcover books, videos, and DVDs. The director said the market has two purposes: to recycle books and get them back into people’s hands who are interested, and also earn money for the Friends of the Library.
For more information, call Dora Davenport, book sale chairperson, at 973-256-5936.
Halloween parade
On Oct. 25 at 10 a.m., the annual West Paterson Halloween parade will be held at Diane Grimes Park on Mt. Pleasant Avenue. Rain date is Oct. 26. Participation is open from infants to fifth graders. The event is free. Costumed young paraders will proceed down Mt. Pleasant to the American Legion Post 238, where a Halloween party will take place, according to Francie Joseph-Keating, borough recreation clerk.
There will be refreshments and prizes for costumes, and goodie bags will be given out, Keating said.
Those interested in marching should contact Keatingr by Oct. 23 to reserve a spot. The number is 973-345-8100, ext. 213. Registration is required to ensure enough supplies for all the children.
The event is jointly sponsored by the West Paterson Committee on Recreation and Community Relations and American Legion 238.
