Carmelo Guarneri

WEST PATERSON - Carmelo Guarneri, 72, died Oct. 8, 2008.

Born in Gela, Sicily, Italy, he came to the United States in 1973 residing in Paterson before moving to West Paterson 15 years ago. He was a salesman for Roma Furniture, Passaic, for several years before retiring in 1990.

Husband of the former Maria C. Ambra of West Paterson. Father of Antonino Guarneri and his wife Joanna of Wayne, Angelo Guarneri and his wife Rosemary of Wayne and Marcello Guarneri and his wife Michele of Totowa. Grandfather of Christina, Carmelo, Samantha, Anthony, Nicolette, Dante, Isabella, and Aiden. Brother of Giuseppe Guarneri of Totowa and Emilia and Linda Guarneri both of Italy. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.

Arthur Herrmann

TOTOWA - Arthur "Art" Hans Hermann Jr., 75, died Oct. 6, 2008.

Born in Paterson, he lived in Totowa the past 72 years. Herrmann was a machinist for Curtiss Wright, Wood Ridge. After that, he was a truck driver for Teamsters Local #560, Jersey City, before retiring. Recently, he was a truck driver for the Wayne Board of Health.

Herrmann was a volunteer with the Totowa Borough Fire Department, Riverview Company #3. He was a member of the American Legion Post 227, Totowa, and was a member of the Passaic Valley Elks Lodge #2111, Totowa. He belonged to the American 3/4 Midget Racing Association and was a Navy veteran during the Korean Conflict on the USS Duxbury Bay.

Father of Arthur Hans Herrmann III of Cedar Grove, Lisa Lisa of Cedar Knolls, Teri Rallo of Roxbury and April Werner of Wayne. Grandfather of Marissa Rose and Stephanie Anne Herrmann, Nicholas John and Kyle Arthur Lisa, Anthony and Gabriella Rallo and Alexandra Eva and Evan Arthur Werner. Longtime companion of Wendy Beckett of Paterson. Brother of Carol Stanton of South Carolina.

Damiano Intrieri

WEST PATERSON - Damiano Intrieri, 75, died Oct. 5, 2008.

Born in San Pietro, Prov. di Cosenza, Italy, he came to the United States in 1963 settling in Paterson before moving to West Paterson over 30 years ago. Intrieri was a mason employed by Marcal Paper Mills, Inc., Elmwood Park, for many years before retiring in 1995.

Husband of the former Rosa Ippolito of West Paterson. Father of Marina Cianchetta and her husband Fabio of North Arlington. Brother of Emilia Rubino of West Paterson, Vittoria Veneziani of Italy, Angelo Intrieri of Totowa and Augustino Intrieri of Italy. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.

Wasyl Lenyk

WAYNE - Wasyl Lenyk, 82, died Oct. 5, 2008.

Husband of the late Anna (nee Kubiak). Father of Miron, Slawko, Wasyl Jr., Igor, Lesia Frawley, Orisia Dwyer and the late Oczana Davis. Grandfather of 14 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Born in Ukraine, he lived in Belgium and Germany before coming to Paterson in 1956 settling in Wayne in 1971. Wasyl was a butcher. He was a parishioner of the Ukrainian Orthodox Holy Ascension Church, Clifton.

Walter Leonhard

TOTOWA - Walter Leonhard, 102, died Oct. 10, 2008.

Leonhard was born in Paterson and lived there before moving to Totowa. He was owner/operator of Walter Leonhard Plumbing & Heating Contractor, Paterson, and retired in 1986. Leonhard was a member of St. Mary Help of Christians R.C. Church, Paterson, and a charter member of its Knights of Columbus Council #6805. Leonard was a member and past president of the Te Tau Wians, the Paterson Lions Club and the Clifton Master Plumbers Association. He was selected to be Mr. Te Tau Wian in 2002.

He is survived by his daughter Carol and her husband William Tribus; sons Walter J. and his wife Edith and Joseph J. and his wife Gloria; 11 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren and his sister Sarah Laurin.

He was predeceased by his wife Anna (nee De Palma); brothers Herbert and Theodore; and sister Dorothy Leonhard.

Elaine Murphy

TOTOWA - Elaine (nee Hackes) Murphy, 77, died Oct. 7, 2008.

Born in Little Falls, she lived in Totowa since 1952. Murphy was a housewife and a volunteer with the National Literacy Program.

Wife of the late Anthony Red Murphy (1991). Mother of Peter Murphy and his wife Maria of Totowa and Patricia Murphy Sagan and her husband Thomas of Blairstown. Grandmother of Jacqueline E. Sagan, Anthony Murphy, Daniel Sagan, Brendan Murphy and Kendall Murphy. Sister of Mary Juhlin of Little Falls, Eleanor Brennan of Little Falls and the late George, Michael, Joseph, Andrew, Peter, Helen, Nelly, Sophie, Eva, and Annie. Kevin Riker

WAYNE - Kevin L. Riker, 55, formerly of Wayne, died on Oct. 7, 2008 after a battle of nearly eight years with Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Riker graduated from Wayne Valley High School with the class of 1971 where he left his mark in athletics. He is a member of the Wayne Valley Football Hall of Fame and he was a star pole-vaulter on the track team. He was also an avid skier and golfer.

Riker moved to Key West, Fla. in the 70s and opened a restaurant called "Poncho & Lefties." He operated the restaurant there for over 13 years before he and his wife moved to Sarasota, Fla. in the late 80s.

For the past few years, during the height of his illness, his niece and nephew made regular visits to Florida, to spend time with him. Riker has no children of his own and his nephew, Ray "Dee" Riker, recently named his own son in his uncle’s honor.

He is survived by his wife of 30 years Donna (nee Delsea) of Sarasota, Fla.; mother Jane Riker; brother Ray Riker and his wife Nancy of Wayne; niece Michelle Hoover and her husband Jeff of Wayne; nephew Ray "Dee" Riker and his wife Mari of Pearl River, N.Y.; great nieces Madeline Riker and Morgan Hoover; and great nephews Kevin Riker and Zachary Hoover.

Nicholas Sottile

WAYNE - Nicholas A. Sottile, 76, died Oct. 10, 2008.

Dr. Sottile was born in Passaic and retired to Pocono Pines, Pa. and Highland Beach, Fla. in 1995 after retiring from his dental practice in Wayne. He served in the U.S. Navy.

Sottile is survived by his wife Lona Dwayne (nee Kern); children Kathleen and her husband Joe Nunnink, Nicholas and his wife Jackie, Lisa and her husband Tom Calianese, and Stephanie and her husband Mark Colantuno; and 14 grandchildren.

Lila Stevens

WAYNE - Lila Ann (nee Froschheuser) Stevens, 84, died Oct. 09, 2008.

She was born in Hastings, Neb. where she spent her formative years and where her family owned a restaurant/tavern, having lived in Bronx, N.Y., Yonkers, N.Y. and Naples, Fla., before moving to Wayne in 1994.

After marrying her husband James in 1944, in a civil ceremony in Kansas and in 1946 affirmed in holy matrimony at St. Helena RC Church, Bronx, N.Y. They spent their retirement years in Naples, Fla. After James’ death, Lila moved to the Sisco Village in Wayne and later Siena Village in Wayne to be closer to her daughters.

Stevens was a member of the Annunciation RC Church, Wayne, where she belonged to the Prime Timers. She was also a member of the Golden Age Circle of Wayne.

She was a seamstress having made many clothes for her children and her children’s dolls. She also enjoyed crocheting, reading, ceramics and driving her car.

One of her greatest hardships was her almost total hearing loss by age 40. She attributed her hearing loss to the electrical equipment she used as a telephone operator.

Wife of 44 years to the late James H. Stevens (1988); mother of Juliana Albertie and her husband Dante of Pearl River, N.Y. and Rita Kelly and her husband Donald of Wayne; grandmother of Dante Albertie Jr. and his wife Stephanie, Jennifer Tempesta and her husband Marc, Lauren Silverman and her husband Lee, Michael and Lisa Kelly; and great-grandmother of Sophia Albertie and Andrew Silverman. She was also predeceased by her brother Warren Froschheuser who, at age16, was killed while taking flying lessons.
