New transit hub opens for commuters

(by Debra Winters - January 14, 2008)

The new $16.3 million intermodel Wayne/Route 23 Transit Center is finally open, offering a variety of bus and rail options in one convenient location.

The state-of-the-art hub provides 1,000 parking spaces as well as heated canopy-type shelters, electronic bus departure screens and bus service seven days a week. The center is located on a 10-acre parcel at the West Belt Road Interchange by the intersection of Routes 23, 46, and Interstate 80 and is directly accessible from Route 23 making for great convenience for commuters.

Weekdays, the center will be served by trains on the Montclair-Boonton Line, offering commuters the flexibility with 22 trains per day — eight inbound to Hoboken and 14 outbound, with the Mountain View Station remaining open.

In addition NJ Transit has created a bus route — the 324 Wayne/Route 23 Transit Center New York Express line implemented to provide frequent express service between the new facility and the Port Authority Bus Terminal in midtown Manhattan.

The 194 Newfoundland-New York route and the new 198 William Paterson University-New York route, which will work on a weekend’s only schedule, will also serve out of the new center. Local service will be offered on the 75 Butler-Newark line operating on weekday peak periods only and the 748 Paterson-Willowbrook line – Monday through Saturday.

"This station allows commuters a unique option, if like say there is traffic backed up at the Lincoln Tunnel, they could easily jump on a train here and head into the city, or vice versa if there’s a delay on the rails, they could hop on a bus. That flexibility is an important aspect of this project," said NJ Transit Executive Director Richard Sarles, at a ribbon cutting ceremony Jan. 11.

Portions of the Mother’s Park & Ride, as it is now being called will remain open with weekday only bus service. The new hours for New York bus departures will be 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. Return service to Mother’s will be available throughout day via the 194 and 324 lines.

The Willowbrook Park & Ride will also become a weekday only operation with Willowbrook Mall shoppers continuing to be served seven days a week.

Rumors that recently began circulating amongst commuters about a daily parking fee at the facilities were found to be true. According to Dan Stessel, representative for NJ Transit, the price has not been announced as of yet. The fees, however, will be waived until March 1.

The future of the already existent park and rides in Wayne will be determined by commuter usage, said Stessel.

During the ceremony, newly elected Assemblyman Scott Rumana, spoke about how the center initially came to be.

"Back in 2002 when I first became mayor we were told that we had to remove cars from Willowbrook Mall parking lot belonging to commuters. So our temporary solution was Mother’s lot but we knew that would only be temporary, we needed a permanent home," he said.

Elaborating on some of the positive aspects of the center, Rumana added, "This new lot is an important in terms of the environment because will be removing a large amount of cars and reducing emissions."

Congressman Bill Pascrell (D-NJ 8th) echoed Rumana’s views.

"By building this station we will be helping commuters’ demands by intercepting hundreds of cars that would normally be clogging the roadways. It will also improve the quality of life in north Jersey. When you think of transportation you think of quality of life. So many commuters each day get home just in time to kiss their children goodnight and that’s unacceptable," Pascrell said.

Mayor Chris Vergano, speaking at his first public event as head of Wayne, praised those accountable for the center.

"This is amazing. I wasn’t responsible for this being built but I’d like to say that I was," he said as the crowd laughed. "Seriously this is an important step in the fight to save the environment. The more cars we can get off the road the better it will be for everyone."
