Five TODAY area teams prep for postseason

(by Doug Scancarella - February 27, 2008)

Wayne – All five Wayne TODAY/Passaic Valley TODAY schools have qualified for the Boys’ State Sectional Basketball Tournament, which began this week.

Of all the teams, DePaul (18-4) has by far the best record. At the same time, the Wayne-based parochial school has the biggest question mark. Division I prospect Justin Crosgile, the team’s leading scorer, remains on the injured list. The junior suffered a high-ankle sprain in a recent victory over Pequannock.

Bart Fazio, the team’s coach, says that his team-leader is "probably done for the season." The coach, however, does add "We’re hoping he can somehow come back. But it doesn’t look good."

DePaul (No. 4) opens the Non-Public North A Tournament by hosting always powerful Seton Hall Prep (No. 5, 21-5) tonight in the quarterfinals. If the Spartans prevail, they would likely play at top-seeded Queen of Peace of North Arlington in the semifinals. DePaul would host the semifinal if the Immaculata (No. 8)-Bergen Catholic (No. 9) winner could upset Queen of Peace. Don Bosco Prep (No. 2) or Pope John-Sparta (No. 3) could be waiting in the championship round.

DePaul enters the tournament on a tear, despite the Crosgile injury. In the team’s most recent outing, they pounded St. Mary’s-Rutherford, 61-48. Shakim Phillips and Karam Simmons led the way with 16 and 15 points respectively. Ahmad Smallwood added 10 points. Mike Hennion had 7.

Wayne Hills also tips off the Section I, Group III tournament tonight. The Patriots (No. 2, 19-6) could be hosting cross-town Wayne Valley (No. 10, 16-9) tonight in the quarterfinals. For that to happen, the Indians would have had to beat Old Tappan (No. 7) on Tuesday, after the Wayne TODAY’s deadline. Hills and Valley have only played each other five times in 42 years. They’ve never played in the postseason.

Hills enters the tournament off of a rare loss, a 58-52 defeat to Pascack Valley. Steve Lequerica hit for 18 points. Joe Russo chipped in with 14. Justin Hourihan contributed 7 points.

Valley recorded two wins this past week. Nick Siljee hit for 27 points and 13 rebounds in a 56-38 triumph over Millburn. Paul Siljee had 15 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Mike DeMoor added 7 points. Jason Rosenberg fired off 9 assists.

Chris Pantale led WV past Montville with 18 points and 16 rebounds in a 57-30 victory. Paul Siljee had 16 points. Rosenberg dished out 11 assists.

If Hills emerges here, they would host either Jefferson (No. 3), Morris Hills (No. 6) or Roxbury (No. 11) in the semifinals on Saturday. Valley would have to play at Jefferson or Morris Hills or possibly host Roxbury.

Passaic Valley (No. 9, 15-8), the defending champion, is situated on the other side of the bracket. They played at Teaneck (No. 8) on Tuesday. The winner of that game plays at top-seeded West Milford tonight.

PV soundly defeated Indian Hills this past week, 62-50. Dom Coiro accounted for 20 points. Matt Piccarelli added 17 points. Chris Calcano had 9 points.

Passaic Tech (No. 12) battled Kennedy (No. 5) in first round of the Section I, Group IV playoffs. The winner took on the winner of Eastside (No. 4)-Ridgewood (No. 13).
